Types of Altruism Theories
Before anything, what is altruism? Altruism is referred to as the unselfish concern for other people’s wellbeing. Daily Life is filled with small acts of altruism or acts of kindness. That is from a grocery store vendor to the woman in the parking lot giving ten dollars to homeless street kids.
Do you know the theories behind altruism? If not, below are altruism theories.
BIOLOGICAL REASONS
This is an evolutionary theory which states that people are likely to help blood relatives because it increases the probability of gene transmission to the upcoming generations.
In other words, altruism unto close relatives occurs for a continuation of sharing genes. Hence, if people are genetically related, they have the highest chances of helping each other.
NEUROLOGICAL REASONS
Neurobiologists have found that altruism activates brain’s centers. The findings further state, when one engages in altruistic activities, pleasure centers of the brain instantly become active.
ENVIRONMENTAL REASONS
In regard to Stanford research, interactions and relationships can influence or enhance altruistic behavior.
SOCIAL NORMS
Social norms such as rules and expectations can either facilitate people to engage or not engage in altruistic acts. For instance, the norm of reciprocity is a social expectation where one feel pressured to help others if they have already done something to them like a situation where a friend loan you $30, you will feel compelled to loan him $ 100 when he requests you. He did something for you; you feel obligated to do something in return.
COGNITIVE REASONS
Altruism is defined as doing something for others without expecting rewards. But this is not the case on many occasions; there may be cognitive incentives that are not obvious. For instance, you may help others to relieve your distress or upholding the view of being kind.
EMPATHY
Researchers suggest that individuals are likely to engage in altruistic behavior due to the empathy they feel for distressed persons. This is known as the empathy-altruism hypothesis. In most cases, as the sense of empathy develops, children tend to become more altruistic.
HELPING RELIEVES NEGATIVE FEELINGS
Experts have proposed that when someone behaves altruistically, they relieve the negative feelings created when seeing someone else suffering. This is known as negative-state relief model.
Normally, seeing other people in agonies make many people feel upset, uncomfortable and distressed. Hence, helping the troubled person will reduce negative feelings.
COMPARING THE ALTRUISM THEORIES
The main point of contention is whether people engage in altruism for helping purposes or there are hidden benefits. Social psychologists believe that there’s true altruism in as much as some people may engage in altruism for selfish reasons.
VERDICT
For you to give or help someone, you have to be contended with what you have. You can’t give what you don’t have. The idea behind altruism is helping without expecting rewards.
No matter which circumstance or aspect that compels you help, ensure you are comfortable and you the capacity. Don’t engage in altruism if you got some challenges that need to be addressed. This is where many people go wrong.

Altruism: An Act That Makes The World Better
People are suffering in every country and sometimes it is hard not only for the people that need help but also for others who can’t bear to see people who are in dire need. Many people believe in altruistic behavior and do random acts of kindness for people, animals, and mankind. They want to make a difference by ensuring that they are doing something good to make others happy without expecting anything in return. This is where the concept of altruism comes in.
There is a difference between thinking of doing good things for others and the altruistic act of doing the good for those who need it. There might be many challenges in between before you can do what you want to do for helping strangers with altruistic actions. There will be criticism about doing good to be good and your act of altruism. People might think that if you help others, you are really expecting something in return even altruism makes you feel good. Skeptics might see that you have some interest in getting something out of your random acts of kindness or altruistic behavior. The challenge is to overcome all these skeptical thoughts by believing you can actually support someone else without expecting something in return. This is what altruism is all about.
AN OUTSTANDING WAY TO DO WELL
If you search history, you will find hundreds of such examples where altruistic acts have made an impact in the life of others. Norman Borlaug has the credit of saving millions of lives with his research of disease-resistant wheat. He had made an impact in the Green revolution and to those people lives who are still reaping the benefits.
There are many other people like Irena Sendler who has saved 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazis by providing them with false documents for identification and smuggling them out of the Ghetto.
These people are unnoted heroes who had done something without the want of taking any credit. They may have been at the right time at the right place. There are others who are still doing this and making a positive impact on the life of others.
WORKING TO DO GOOD
Altruism teaches people to be kind to anyone who is in front of you. If you want you can donate every year for providing education to children under poverty. That is good, but you can do beyond that too.
Many efforts are taken by various people around the world that has made this world a better place to live. They have taught that by extending a helping hand what you do is create the bonding between those hands that holds the extended hand.
One can try to fight extreme poverty that is taking a toll on many countries of the world. People are not able to feed their children even once a day. Giving them food to supply is a solution but not a permanent one. An altruistic person will do something that will help those people to earn something to feed their children and not depend on the donation.

Does cyber begging really work for those who need financial help for a genuine cause?
A brief history of Cyber begging
Definition of Cyber begging: Cyber begging or Internet begging is the online version of traditional begging. At Internet panhandling, you can ask a stranger for money to meet basic needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare or even you can ask for money to pay your debt. Cyber begging is totally different from street begging, and it can be practiced anonymously. So, you can protect your identity and dignity while begging money via Cyber-begging.
During the early age of the internet, cyber-begging or internet-begging was evident in the form of individual advertisements for help on local bulletin board systems. In 2002, cyber-begging gained famous and momentum when Karyn Bosnak started her SaveKaryn.com as an attempt to have the online help pay her credit card debt. Her SaveKaryn.com was probably the first cyber begging site to gain wide exposure and it later became a sample for many to follow.
How does cyber begging work?
Cyber begging works via donation through PayPal. Cyber-begging websites list down the people who are in need of financial help. If you are in trouble, you have to pen down a story first and feature it on the cyber begging sites. When your stories are sent, ads are created, and then your ads are displayed on other internet-begging sites as well. One of the cyber-begging sites is Begslist.com
In the next time, all of your ads will be posted on social networking and poker sites as well. So, your stories will be read by many people. If your story has genuinely touched people, they will definitely make a contribution. This part is really tricky for us. So, it may also be possible that you may not receive any contribution from the people at all.
A real successful Cyber beggar
Karyn Bosnak was a woman, and she was able to pay off her $20,000 credit card debt via Cyber begging. She started SaveKaryn.com as an attempt to have the online help pay her credit card debt. She wrote on her website:"Please help me pay my debt. I am nice. I am cheery. I didn't hurt anyone by spending too much money. I was actually helping out the economy. If you help me, then someday someone might help you when you need it."
Why you should try Cyber begging?
If you are in financial trouble, you have the right to request for financial help. You have also the right to protect your identity and self-esteem. Cyber-begging is 100% legal and ethical for those who need financial help for a genuine cause. So, there is nothing to be ashamed of to ask individuals for financial help. So, if you are facing fatal financial trouble, you should try Cyber begging today.
