Recognizing scams

Most scams attempts involve one or more of the following:

  • Email or text from someone that is not local to your area.
  • Vague initial inquiry, e.g. asking about "the item." Poor grammar/spelling.
  • Western Union, Money Gram, cashier check, money order, paypal, shipping, escrow service, or a "guarantee."
  • Asking for a FEE in order for you to receive money is the most common scam.
  • Inability or refusal to meet face-to-face to complete the transaction.

Examples of Scams

1. Someone claims your transaction is guaranteed, that a buyer/seller is officially certified, OR that a third party of any kind will handle or provide protection for a payment:
  • These claims are fraudulent, as transactions are between users only.
  • The scammer will often send an official looking (but fake) email that appears to come from craigslist or another third party, offering a guarantee, certifying a seller, or pretending to handle payments.
2. Distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check:
  • You receive an email or text (examples below) offering to buy your item, pay for your services in advance, or rent your apartment, sight unseen and without meeting you in person.
  • A cashier's check is offered for your sale item as a deposit for an apartment or for your services.
  • Value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item—scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service.
  • Banks will cash fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, sometimes including criminal prosecution.
  • Scams often pretend to involve a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate, etc.).
3. Someone requests wire service payment via Western Union or MoneyGram:
  • Deal often seems too good to be true, price is too low, or rent is below market, etc.
  • Scam "bait" items include apartments, laptops, TVs, cell phones, tickets, other high value items.
  • Scammer may (falsely) claim a confirmation code from you is needed before he can withdraw your money.
  • Common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, UK, Netherlands—but could be anywhere.
  • Rental may be local, but owner is "travelling" or "relocating" and needs you to wire money abroad.
  • Scammer may pretend to be unable to speak by phone (scammers prefer to operate by text/email).
4. Distant person offers to send you a cashier's check or money order and then have you wire money:
  • This is ALWAYS a scam in our experience—the cashier's check is FAKE.
  • Sometimes accompanies an offer of merchandise, sometimes not.
  • Scammer often asks for your name, address, etc. for printing on the fake check.
  • Deal often seems too good to be true.
5. Distant seller suggests use of an online escrow service:
  • Most online escrow sites are FRAUDULENT and operated by scammers.
  • For more info, do a google search on "fake escrow" or "escrow fraud."
6. Distant seller asks for a partial payment upfront, after which they will ship goods:
  • He says he trusts you with the partial payment.
  • He may say he has already shipped the goods.
  • Deal often sounds too good to be true.
7. Foreign company offers you a job receiving payments from customers, then wiring funds:

  • Foreign company may claim it is unable to receive payments from its customers directly.
  • You are typically offered a percentage of payments received.
  • This kind of "position" may be posted as a job, or offered to you via email.

Sophia rush is a scam as well, if you email them they promise to send money if you send them a wire fee. They have several ads on the site.

Sophia Rush, Calvin, Christina, Russell, Kim Steele, Dolores Dubby, Jason.....All scammers. Beware!

Wow, sophia rush almost got me. Thought someone was really going to help me out. Glad I looked into it first. It did seem too good to be true. Guess I was right. Why would someone want to take advantage of someone who has nothing?

Johnathen Todd Knight is another one. And Jason Petrillo has seemed to have changed his name to Jason Chittum. These people think they are smart! Just remember to ask alot of questions and do not be taken in by them!

Hi all anyone heard of Max Roach asking me to send photo ID and selfie for his lawyer. Thank you

santiago mercant said...

Alicia Jackson have just scammed me.... fuck! Aliqson@gmail.com fuck you. Luckly were only 157 dolars...

Anonymous said...

@Rh Uk... I have been contacted by Max Roach as well. He has not asked me for my photo ID and selfie but maybe that's next. He told me he'd send me money, then stated that he would send me extra, and I would be responsible for sending the rest of the money to another charity. He had a reason and explained it in email. I keep my share, and send the remaining. Is this how it started for you? With him?

Rh uk said...

@Anonymous.. he basically asked me to earn his trust then ask in the next message for Id for his lawyer how far have you got

Anonymous said...

@Rh uk... He asked if he could trust me in sending the portion of money to the charity and said the charity address information would be send to me at some point. That is all I've heard from him at this point. I haven't actually seen the check yet. I will update you if I hear from him.

Rh uk said...

Thank you I will do the same

Rh uk said...

@anonymous how long have you been waiting?

Anonymous said...

@Ru uk...The last time I heard from him was Friday 4/20. That was when he told me my check had been issued for more than he originally told me for the charity because...(log explanation) and that i'd be receiving the charity's contact info at some point.

Did he give you the same story? About giving you extra and having you send the extra portion to another person or charity?

Rh uk said...

@anonymous no heard nothing like that I don’t know what to do I want to trust but there’s so many scams and some have told me they would send the funds if I pay a transfer fee because will assure them I am in need but they want like £100 or more and on the site they want to use it’s $7 so I can’t afford to lose anything

Anonymous said...

@ Rh uk... I have been in the same boat. It sounds like a dream come true until they ask you for money. This guy never asked me for anything except for my name & address to send the check. No money and no bank account information. Its not over yet so it's possible that he will still ask. Him not asking me for money or bank numbers is the reason I've continued to talk to him.

Anonymous said...

Stay away from Betty Moss, she claims to financially help those in need, but asks for a 'refundable' one time transfer fee to do this, when she (or he) could simply donate to the gofundme page(s) of those in need etc...

She is on instagram @wewillhelpyourightaway

Other scam reports have been made about this account and elsewhere online. Never send your personal info or or money to anyone!

Has anyone been sent a check? I received one. I haven't cashed it yet or tried...kinda scared to try. Just curious if anyone else dealt with this. @ Rh Uk....this is from Max Roach. Check has a company name of and I've thought about calling them.

Betty Moss is total scammer, bemossbe@gmail. I posted my gofundme link on instagram, she let message saying they would help. I resent the link, and she said they had been "burned in the past by gofundme" total crap! So I played along. She said she only used western union, and could I afford the one time refundable transfer fee.
I said " yeah, western union online only charges $10, and it charges me at the end" And then said go ahead and western union online, cause its easy and thats the "only way she trusts". She responded with "ok". And never heard back from her again.
Total total scam. Anytime anyone asks for money upfront is a scam.

Jess C xo said...

Betty Moss (bemossme@gmail.com, IG: wewillhelpyourightawayyy) just tried to get me also. I posted my gofundmelink on Instagram and she left a comment saying she could help and provide the total amount needed. she also asked for a one time refundable fee of $115 that would be sent right away along with the total amount needed. I suggested she make a contribution on my gofundmelink or she may use Venmo, which there is no fee required to use. she said without the fee nothing can be done. glad I did some research before I was suckered in.

Mark Peterson and James Morales both ask for bank account information and credit card information.. they refuse PayPal and get defensive and rude if you don't do it their way. Things like, "are you the one that decides how I help you" they will make you feel bad and pretty much wave the money in your face to get the information from you... Do not give them any information. Hell they will be relentless. They'll listen to your problems, theyre good listeners and then they will bully you. Tell you not to talk to people..... they may threaten you or try to scare you. . They actually sent cab to my house to take me to the bank. I told the cab company it was a scammer, they ordered pizza and had it delivered.. I had to call the cops, cancel all my credit cards and change my phone number.

Hi everyone, luckily I read this post before sending anything to bemossbe@gmail.com. Another Instagram account contacted me to help me, "thelinvillex". They're supposed to be a couple giving financial aid. The woman wrote me to email my story to slinvillex@gmail.com
I did it and still got no answer, but has anyone any information about them?
Btw I'm trying to raise some money to be able to study abroad, I'll be grateful to anyone sharing it:

I am in contact with thelinvillex right now and it seems just as fishy as the rest of these, wanted a fee of 107 in order to deposit money I told her I couldn't pay that and I asked how do I know she isnt a scammer. She gave me all sorts of reasons and then said they would do pay pal I just needed to get a $50 iTunes card, I asked them why dont they just take $50 off of the money they are donating to me and they came back with all sorts of excuese... well to bad so sad I'm not giving them any money. If someone was really about helping those in need they wouldn't ask for a fee.

~Sara said...

I had imagined it 😅 especially cause on my account there was my website's link, so if they had seriously been interested in helping me somehow, they would have had the chance to do it through GoFundMe instead of asking to be emailed. Thank you for answering btw. Unfortunately I'm from Italy and can't do much from here, but I'll do my best to warn people to stay away from them.

I am very thankful to be reading this.. My boyfriend found out he a cancerous tumor and we can't afford the surgery to get it removed yet. Im struggling as is, and to pull a scam on someone who is trying to be healthy from cancer is wrong.. Sorry this irritates me now... thank you for posting this so others can see.

Is that all? I would be so grateful. I am glad you have a big heart and only want to help people out of the kindness of your heart without expecting anything in return. I am sure your mother and father are really happy for you for being so kind. Karma has to exist because you deserve twice what you are doing for people and god will surely give you what you deserve... Hope that blessings you wish me are returned twice for you. Wow, you are all over the internet as a scammer. They've reported your page to Instagram. Sad that you take advantage of poor people. Do it with people who have money. And I do hope karma gets you....pathetic liar and scumbag.

Seriously; did ANY of you ever got a donation from a stranger over the Internet? I hihgly Doubt that. No One Really cares about the poor and Homeless. Its sad and unfair that there are so many hilarious wealthy people in this World that could easily donate some money to the poor...it wont do them any Harm.

But whats even worse is the fact that there are scammers who Take Advantage of the Desperate cry for help.

I only believe in humanity if someone generous is willing to help with my Financial Situation (im 3000€ in debt, have an autistic son with Adhd and copd, car is broken)

Its Not a Made up story. Im from Germany and can Proof my Situation.

Yep, Betty Moss is on instagram as "wewillhelpyourightawayyy" with the phone number 205-530-8061. Email "bemossbegmail.com". They want money sent to them 1st to cover the cost of a western union check for the amount of money you need. They say they were burned by go fund me and cant help me unless I send them money first.

Now if you are asking for donations, how could you afford to give them money to cover the cost of a check?

Simply because they asked for money first, and would not use my go fund me account I knew they were not honest. People like this should all be arrested for fraud. Period.

Mary Secrest said...

They absolutely should be arrested. I'm sickened by this...They stopped replying to me entirely when I said I couldn't afford the transfer fee. But if you want to help people and have excess money, why would you make them pay for the fees??

I would like to thank everyone on here for reporting their experiences. I posted a GoFundMe and BAM! The “wife” of the Stacy and Michael Linville duo wanted me to pay $57 via Wesern Union so they could send me a donation. #1. I didn’t think it cost the donor on a GoFundMe #2. My identity has already be verified (that was her reasoning) #3. Errors in her sentences. It discusses me how people have know conscience. My daughters apartment caught fire, she did not have renters insurance (unfortunately) and I set up an account just to help replace my 4 1/2 month old grandsons items and these scum of the earth wanted to take advantage of that. I see it as them taking straight from him. Karma will come around. Good luck to everyone in their time of need..
