Recognizing scams

Most scams attempts involve one or more of the following:

  • Email or text from someone that is not local to your area.
  • Vague initial inquiry, e.g. asking about "the item." Poor grammar/spelling.
  • Western Union, Money Gram, cashier check, money order, paypal, shipping, escrow service, or a "guarantee."
  • Asking for a FEE in order for you to receive money is the most common scam.
  • Inability or refusal to meet face-to-face to complete the transaction.

Examples of Scams

1. Someone claims your transaction is guaranteed, that a buyer/seller is officially certified, OR that a third party of any kind will handle or provide protection for a payment:
  • These claims are fraudulent, as transactions are between users only.
  • The scammer will often send an official looking (but fake) email that appears to come from craigslist or another third party, offering a guarantee, certifying a seller, or pretending to handle payments.
2. Distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check:
  • You receive an email or text (examples below) offering to buy your item, pay for your services in advance, or rent your apartment, sight unseen and without meeting you in person.
  • A cashier's check is offered for your sale item as a deposit for an apartment or for your services.
  • Value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item—scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service.
  • Banks will cash fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, sometimes including criminal prosecution.
  • Scams often pretend to involve a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate, etc.).
3. Someone requests wire service payment via Western Union or MoneyGram:
  • Deal often seems too good to be true, price is too low, or rent is below market, etc.
  • Scam "bait" items include apartments, laptops, TVs, cell phones, tickets, other high value items.
  • Scammer may (falsely) claim a confirmation code from you is needed before he can withdraw your money.
  • Common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, UK, Netherlands—but could be anywhere.
  • Rental may be local, but owner is "travelling" or "relocating" and needs you to wire money abroad.
  • Scammer may pretend to be unable to speak by phone (scammers prefer to operate by text/email).
4. Distant person offers to send you a cashier's check or money order and then have you wire money:
  • This is ALWAYS a scam in our experience—the cashier's check is FAKE.
  • Sometimes accompanies an offer of merchandise, sometimes not.
  • Scammer often asks for your name, address, etc. for printing on the fake check.
  • Deal often seems too good to be true.
5. Distant seller suggests use of an online escrow service:
  • Most online escrow sites are FRAUDULENT and operated by scammers.
  • For more info, do a google search on "fake escrow" or "escrow fraud."
6. Distant seller asks for a partial payment upfront, after which they will ship goods:
  • He says he trusts you with the partial payment.
  • He may say he has already shipped the goods.
  • Deal often sounds too good to be true.
7. Foreign company offers you a job receiving payments from customers, then wiring funds:

  • Foreign company may claim it is unable to receive payments from its customers directly.
  • You are typically offered a percentage of payments received.
  • This kind of "position" may be posted as a job, or offered to you via email.

    1. They are still up to it too! I've been talking to a Betty Moss for the last 24 hours and I've been playing them at their own game! bemossbe@gmail.com from Intsagram... livnlifeinone@gmail.com Mr and Mrs Wheeler... Both accounts up to scamming people but the Wheelers did not reply to me when I caught them out! Betty Moss asking for $35 to he sent to lilyketer3@gmail.com (PayPal)... I will copy all and send to PayPal and Instagram so they will review and delete... Please dont be fooled and do not part with your cash people! Even though you're hard up and facing possible life changing circumstances due to your finances if it sounds too good to be true then it sure is! I'm in a situation but my conversation with Betty over the last 24 hours has brightened my mood regardless to my circumstances.. stay safe people

Betty moss contacted me about paying for my service dog. Everything everyone is saying is happening to me. I glad I looked this up before doing anything. Seemed to good to be real. When I’m doubt or it seems to good to be true it probably is unfortunately. Sad that folks do this

Of course, even if i have 62usd ill never wire. Lol

    3. I googled martin altizer and found posts on other social media sites by him that mention he is struggling financially. That he would try to scam people that are creating gofundme campaigns to raise money for vet bills for ailing beloved pets, or a family member that is ill etc is despicable. Also watch out for Alexis and michael wheeler, betty moss, etc
Almost all of these similar scams from accts that have been blessed by the lord and want to help people financially use the same number (623)-850-8123 and prey on gonfundme and instagram accts trying to raise money for anything offering to give large amounts of money to help you get back on your feet. They want you to pay them the transfer fees. If they want to help you out so much, they can just donate to your gofundme that way. Do not trust an offer like this from any name.

He told me he'd send me money, then stated that he would send me extra, and I would be responsible for sending the rest of the money to another charity. He had a reason and explained it in email. I keep my share, and send the remaining. Is this how it started for you? With him?

Did he give you the same story? About giving you extra and having you send the extra portion to another person or charity?

  37. @anonymous no heard nothing like that I don’t know what to do I want to trust but there’s so many scams and some have told me they would send the funds if I pay a transfer fee because will assure them I am in need but they want like £100 or more and on the site they want to use it’s $7 so I can’t afford to lose anything

  38. @ Rh uk... I have been in the same boat. It sounds like a dream come true until they ask you for money. This guy never asked me for anything except for my name & address to send the check. I said " yeah, western union online only charges $10, and it charges me at the end" And then said go ahead and western union online, cause its easy and thats the "only way she trusts". She responded with "ok". And never heard back from her again.

Things like, "are you the one that decides how I help you" they will make you feel bad and pretty much wave the money in your face to get the information from you... Do not give them any information. Hell they will be relentless. They'll listen to your problems, theyre good listeners and then they will bully you. Tell you not to talk to people..... they may threaten you or try to scare you. . They actually sent cab to my house to take me to the bank. I told the cab company it was a scammer, they ordered pizza and had it delivered.. She gave me all sorts of reasons and then said they would do pay pal I just needed to get a $50 iTunes card, I asked them why dont they just take $50 off of the money they are donating to me and they came back with all sorts of excuese... well to bad so sad I'm not giving them any money. If someone was really about helping those in need they wouldn't ask for a fee.

    2. I had imagined it 😅 especially cause on my account there was my website's link, so if they had seriously been interested in helping me somehow, they would have had the chance to do it through GoFundMe instead of asking to be emailed. Thank you for answering btw. Unfortunately I'm from Italy and can't do much from here, but I'll do my best to warn people to stay away from them.

    3. I am very thankful to be reading this.. My boyfriend found out he a cancerous tumor and we can't afford the surgery to get it removed yet. So we have a GoFundMe account and have been sharing it everywhere.. However, she replied to my post to email her.. I am right now, but after reading this I may just ignore the rest... Im struggling as is, and to pull a scam on someone who is trying to be healthy from cancer is wrong.. Sorry this irritates me now... thank you for posting this so others can see.

    5. And how they want 157$ - it’s sad because image I got my settlement I had given it to people and donated and never asked for money, and now that, well I’m broke and living with abusive and manipulative family, I’m getting scammers - it’s just so heartbreaking that there seems to be no other people out there like me and that I’m naive and ... ugh. Well here’s to sleeping outside, right?

Is that all? I would be so grateful. I am glad you have a big heart and only want to help people out of the kindness of your heart without expecting anything in return. I am sure your mother and father are really happy for you for being so kind. Karma has to exist because you deserve twice what you are doing for people and god will surely give you what you deserve... Hope that blessings you wish me are returned twice for you. Wow, you are all over the internet as a scammer. They've reported your page to Instagram. Sad that you take advantage of poor people. Do it with people who have money. And I do hope karma gets you....pathetic liar and scumbag.

  55. Seriously; did ANY of you ever got a donation from a stranger over the Internet? I hihgly Doubt that. No One Really cares about the poor and Homeless. Its sad and unfair that there are so many hilarious wealthy people in this World that could easily donate some money to the poor...it wont do them any Harm.

But whats even worse is the fact that there are scammers who Take Advantage of the Desperate cry for help.

I only believe in humanity if someone generous is willing to help with my Financial Situation (im 3000€ in debt, have an autistic son with Adhd and copd, car is broken)

Its Not a Made up story. Im from Germany and can Proof my Situation.

So if someone want to help me PayPal.me/cinnamokuma (or click my name)

Their page is listed as 'wewillhelpyourightaway' (email is bmossbe@gmail.com) and they have a number listed as well (205.530.8061). I thought they were going to help me because I'm stupid and really need help so I was deserpate. I'm trying to get my grandma an Inogen oxygen tank and a walker and get into a safe living environment and they offered to help...I don't understand why people are so cruel and try to scam people in bad situations and try to make their situation worse. Yep, Betty Moss is on instagram as "wewillhelpyourightawayyy" with the phone number 205-530-8061. Email "bemossbegmail.com". They want money sent to them 1st to cover the cost of a western union check for the amount of money you need. They say they were burned by go fund me and cant help me unless I send them money first.

Now if you are asking for donations, how could you afford to give them money to cover the cost of a check?

Simply because they asked for money first, and would not use my go fund me account I knew they were not honest. People like this should all be arrested for fraud. Period.

I am in contact with Betty Moss right now. She just asked if I could afford a one time refundable transfer fee. I replied, "If it's on Go Fund Me, there is no transfer fee. You can simply donate straight from the link." I knew it was too goo to be true when she/he/they contacted me, but I emailed just in case. THEN I googled and found you lovely people with the same issue! I hope nobody gets scammed out of money. ALWAYS research a "too good to be true" thing. I mean, who knows, MAYBE there is a lovely lady willing to help people.

  69. I would like to thank everyone on here for reporting their experiences. I posted a GoFundMe and BAM! The “wife” of the Stacy and Michael Linville duo wanted me to pay $57 via Wesern Union so they could send me a donation. #1. I didn’t think it cost the donor on a GoFundMe #2. My identity has already be verified (that was her reasoning) #3. Errors in her sentences. It discusses me how people have know conscience. My daughters apartment caught fire, she did not have renters insurance (unfortunately) and I set up an account just to help replace my 4 1/2 month old grandsons items and these scum of the earth wanted to take advantage of that. I see it as them taking straight from him. Karma will come around. Good luck to everyone in their time of need..

I needed fund to help make by visa and passport to travel abroad and study and also to work in others to earn a living. Well, people did contact me but till date non has ever replied me after they contacted me. Even to the extent of sending them a bank account details and tried to get in touch with them through hangout but non seem to pick up. Am in here begging, how on earth would I get money to call normal call .The cost is very high because am in Ghana unless whatsapp or hangout that a less cheap since all one needs is internet connectivity and because of the act of some people, now am unable to fulfill my dreams.

I am glad my gut knew i was being hussled by scammers. Sad though, my husband just found out his cancer last year metastisized to his liver so we started a gofundme. I posted on fb and instagram and wouldn't you know it Betty moss and Stacy and Michael Linville commented. I played along with emails, but when they said nonrefundable fee and do it now "NO DELAY" lol i said wow sorry we have no money to spare that is why we created a gofundme. haven't heard back. Please everyone if someone truly wants to help you they will. If they ask for any personal info or for you to send them $ first it is a SCAM! period. If you have a gofundme or some other campaign people can make donations through them. It breaks my heart reading some of these where people have lost everything hoping there is still kindness out there. There is but never if you have to pay first. May God Bless you all

  106. So glad I found this thread. I have been contacted by Olivia and Larry this morning in respect to an instagram post that I made where I was promoting a memorial for Lynette Culver - one of Ted Bundy's known victims. We're supporting the family's wishes to try and raise funds for a memorial bench.
I thought it was odd they were contacting me to email them my "story" as all the information was in the post and the go fund me link is in my bio for people to click - it's not rocket science surely. Still I emailed them to say here's the story - is not for me so if you want to donate go to the go fund me site. I'll repeat this to them if they actually come back to me on email. Basically I'm not going to pay anyone for them to "donate" to a cause. If they're legit and they want to donate they can do it online like everyone else.

  111. Olivia and Larry Cook appear to be a scam according to this site. They sent me an instagram comment for a campaign I'm supporting. Sick people taking advantage of people already in challenging situations.

  112. I have also sent my request for funds to them where am looking for funds to support children and vulnerable adults in my foundation after seeing an instagram post that they can help anyone for financial help but please extend my company. Thax

  113. I just got contacted by Larry and Olivia Cook. I didnt know it was a scam or not so I decided to look them up first. They commented on my insta page saying they would be happy to give me the 15,750 I need to complete my goal for my Gofundme I created for my grandma to reunite her with her family in Korea. They said I needed ti wire my money through Walmart i was like wtf... and the transaction fee was $77. Uh... Im only in high school I dont have that money. ANYWAYS!! I'm so glad I found this first so I didnt get scammed. They actually seemed like genuine nice people but they turned out to be lying snakes. Their instagram had removed all the comments.
If you guys could check my Gofundme it would mean a lot to me <3!!

  115. Olivia and Larry Cook (aliqson@gmail) have been contacting me. They asked for more information after seeing the gofundme post on my page. My niece has stage 4 cancer and being denied for assistance.

She tried to explain the fees to me. I had something to give back each time. She then said Larry would accept a $50 Target card. That way they could still assist others. I said so I pay you to pay me. Then she says everyone feels sorry for saying that once they get their money. Told her if this was real tell me what to do. I haven't heard back yet.Maybe she thought about it but glad I saw this. Would have hated to add this to my stupid list.

Take a look at my page will you

  116. Larry and Olivia Cook are still at it. They left a comment on my Instagram about my GoFundMe. It smelled like a scam, I emailed out of curiosity, then they asked for me to cover the fee and that was a dead giveaway. I'm not about to give personal information to a stranger on the internet.

  117. They contacted me. Have not made it to the fees part yet, but that would make it somewhat obvious it is fake. Too bad that people do this, but sometimes to get the good, you have to wade through the bad. Without Gofundme, many would be out of luck, though it hurts to be jerked around or scammed, I am still thankful that gofundme and similar networks exist. I can accept the bad for the good we do get, while getting wiser in the process. Best to all, I hope you all get the support you need.

  118. Olivia and Larry contacted me today as well after I posted my Gofundme story on Instagram. I never trust people like them but I mailed them out of curiosity what would happen.
they said I have to pay around 60$ transferring fees via PayPal.
Its sad to see that other people make use of people in need.

  119. This is not my first time dealing with scammers like this, But the first time with larry and olivia. Its a shame people do this. But it is totally fun and feels good to mess with people like this. I will be having fun emailing with them. I know they dont care but its fun to jerk around with people like this.

I created a gofundme for my dog and then here comes
    ALTIZERMARTIN2@GMAIL.COM
    and
    livnlifeinone@gmail.com
Their Instagram has no update, not much followers and comments which probably they delete, and a picture stolen from who knows where.
Just the fact that they are willing to give me the entire vet bill i need for 8,000, is already alarming. Who would help you direct from a stranger too an 8,000???? I mean do you have a non profit org or at least a business running where you can be contacted? a charity or some sort/ but a stranger? And your basis is just "because God loves us and blesses us with a new home and car when we used to be homeless"..come on, lets face it, you were homeless and you are sharing your blessings now coz you're blessed to have a NEW home? come on. only 7 years old would probably believe. i dealt with lots of scammrs in the past but not a single one fooled me. I am smart about that, but i love to play w/ these people like let them have hard time going to western union with fake confirmation code. LOL then block them ha ha ha. let them get hungry for money that is not really sent to them. a dose of their own med.

Names : Alexis & Michael Wheeler (of course fake)

Ese señor con cara de mendigo loco altizermartin2@gmail.com me contactó por mi campaña de Gofundme. Pretendía que le enviara una tarifa en dólares (reembolsable) cuando me entregara el donativo por Money Gram en efectivo.... Falso. Es un estafador. NO SE DEJEN ENGAÑAR

  128. Just about got scammed by instagram @seek_help_here_always AKA Betty & Andrew Moss. Does anyone recognize the poor people in the photo whose identity they have stolen. Probably from an Ensure or adult diaper ad😕. Can’t believe people can be so low to pray on people with Go Fund Me Accounts that are already having a difficult time 😡
